Good news for U.S. foreign policy and randomness

It's been a while since I've posted anything on here. There are several reasons for this but chiefly: 1) I've been busy, 2) I've been jaded with...everything, and 3) My guy got elected and I've just wanted to enjoy it. Well now I'm breaking out of my funk, but no promises for consistent posts.

Obama got elected: awesome. From day 1, however, he has continually disappointed me with the people he has been appointing to top position in his cabinet. Chief among these disappointments: Hillary Clinton as Secretary of State. However, good news appears to be on the horizon, as it appears the National Security Council, headed by one appointment that I found commendable, Adm. Jim Jones, will be getting more authority. Brzezinski contends, in his book Second Chance, that a president who wants to be more personally involved in foreign policy formulation and implementation will give a significantly greater roll to the NSA rather than the Sec. of State, who will usually receive greater autonomy during a presidency that focuses on domestic politics. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/02/07/AR2009020702076.html?hpid=topnews

On a somewhat related note, maybe the Israel ass-kissing can stop now. And maybe, just maybe, the United States will finally realize that the legitimate voice of the Palestinian people is not the PA and the feckless Mahmoud Abbas but Hamas, as certified by their internationally verified victory in the Bush-instituted election of 2006. Further, maybe when we tell the Israelis to stop doing things, i.e. ghettoizing the West Bank, buliding settlements, etc., they'll actually listen. Then again, Netanyahu looks poised to win the Israeli election if Livni cannot construct a coalition government. Maybe we should just cut them off, ostracize them and send them down the path they are already on: the end of Apartheid South Africa.

Somewhat related to the issue of Israel, the developments in Iran will prove to be quite interesting in the coming days and months. I'm somewhat of an "Iranophile" and follow Iranian politics regularly and I'm uber-excited. The reason: Mohammad Khatami has announced that he'll challenge the moron Ahmadinejad in the June presidential elections. A victory for Khatami would be good for Obama as he states he will engage in direct dialogue with the Iranians. Either way, hopefully the Obama administration learns from the Bush administration's failures and idiocy, and recognizes that Iran is indeed the new regional powerhouse in the Middle East (see Robert Baer, The Devil We Know).

My opinion on the economy: um.... Well every single global market finished up on Friday-- except Japan's which finished even. Somebody is making a lot of money right now from smart investments. The Dow has yet to fall to the levels it did in the immediate aftermath of 9/11, but the economic situation is significantly more dire. Also, stimulus package = stupid. How long until our national debt will be 100% of annual GDP? When that happens, we're screwed! Also, Geithner needs to go...not sure who to replace him with though....
